Iodine is primarily produced through two key nucleosynthetic processes:
Rapid Neutron Capture Process (r-process):
The r-process occurs in environments with extremely high neutron densities, such as during core-collapse supernovae or neutron star mergers.
In these environments, atomic nuclei rapidly capture neutrons before they have a chance to decay, creating very heavy, neutron-rich elements, including iodine.
Iodine-129 (one of iodine's important isotopes) and iodine-127 (the stable isotope) are formed in this way.
Slow Neutron Capture Process (s-process):
The s-process occurs in the late stages of the life cycle of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars.
In the s-process, nuclei slowly capture neutrons over long periods, and this process can also produce iodine, though it contributes less to iodine production compared to the r-process.
